The Bitter Woman

In 1932, a young lady named Su Fen, in pursuit of freedom and love, defied her parents’ wishes and eloped with her sweetheart, Chun Sheng, to the docks without a dowry or a wedding banquet. The couple made a home in a shack. Chun Sheng earned money through his sweat and blood carrying grain sacks, while Su Fen mended clothes and did laundry to make ends meet. Despite their meager days, they were full of hope. However, once Chun Sheng saved a little money, his heart began to wander. He became entangled with a flashy young lady in the city, and staying out all night became his new normal. When Su Fen became pregnant, she tearfully begged him to return to her, only to be met with Chun Sheng’s ab*e. During an argument, she was pushed to the ground, losing their child. Their years of affection had been misplaced after all. With nowhere else to turn, Su Fen returned to her hometown, only to find her reputation in ruins. From then on, Su Fen lived alone, collecting tr*sh and recyclables by day and wandering the streets at night with a basket, selling lighters. Enduring the elements and the cold stares of others, this bitter woman relied on her resilience to struggle for survival in the dust, all to hold onto the last shred of her dignity.
